One of my favourite things to do when I am on holidays is to skip the hotel breakfast, find a small roadside cafe and enjoy people watching while sipping a delicious beverage. With this in mind while I was in Bali I set out on foot looking for one of these small roadside cafes.
It took a bit of walking but eventually I found a place which looked slightly promising that i could try for breakfast. From my limited knowledge of Indonesian I knew that ‘nasi’ meant rice’ and ‘ayam’ meant chicken and my thoughts were “You can’t go wrong with rice and chicken right?”. I sat down and the staff didn’t make me feel incredibly welcome, they were slightly abrupt to me in regards to the ordering process. In terms of decor it was fairly simple with dark wood tables and chairs and rendered concrete walls. All these points normally mean that a good meal is coming my way.
There is only one item on the menu which the waitress described as ‘chicken’. When my meal arrived the first impressions weren’t great, it just didn’t look vibrant and tasty at all. What I recieved above was a couple of different kinds of chicken including spicy chicken and chicken liver and that was served with a snake bean salad. Upon relfection it wasn’t a good meal, I just remember the chicken being served at room temperature and it just being incredibly dry.
Sometimes when you roll the dice on random restaurants it doesn’t always work out and unfortunately this was the case with Nasi Ayam Kedetawan, inbetween the incredibly dry chicken and the rude service I can’t reccomend it to anyone. While I was walking back to my hotel room I came to the realization that it’s not fair to compare the breakfast culture in places like Kuala Lumpur and Singapore to Bali as they are cities with a lot of office workers that need to get their morning breakfast fix. I think for the next time in Bali when it comes to breakfast I will just stick around the hotel.
